Sources of Waste for WTE and Opportunities for Packagers
John Williams
Senior Vice President
HDR Engineering
Introductory presentation on the value of solid waste as a replacement opportunity in a resource-limited global environment. He will start by presenting a case study concerning packaging in Hawaii and how it relates to Waste-to-Energy. In addition, Mr Williams will elaborate on the Clinton Global Initiatives' Rethinking Waste Action Network, and the value of solid waste as a replacement opportunity in a resource-limited global environment.

Obstacles and Hurdles to WTE implementation and infrastructure:  The “Not-In-My-Backyard” Issue, and obstacles that WTE companies face with up scaling. In addition, a comparative breakdown of the good, the bad and the ugly of Recycling, Landfill and WTE will be presented.

9:45 am – 10:15 am:   Technology
Marco Castaldi
Assistant Professor of Earth and Environmental Engineering
Columbia University
Review of Recycling vs. Landfill vs. WTE, and will conclude with the obstacles WTE companies face. WTE is widely accepted in Europe, but not in North America. Castaldi will address the current status of each and will provide answers as to why WTE has yet to be accepted in North America.
